In order to extract as much of the essential oil components of agarwood as much as possible, it is usually necessary to crush the agarwood so that the essential oil components can be separated more easily.
Using the steam distillation method, the crude oil of agarwood directly obtained from the oil-water separator is milky white or light yellow with poor fluidity.
It turns waxy at around 5°C and looks a bit like condensed milk. Its volatilization speed is medium, mellow, sweet, and cool, and without an unpleasant odor.
The primary oil and the refined essential oil of agarwood are more clear in appearance, but in terms of other physical properties, the results obtained by using different grades of agarwood and using water vapor distillation are only different in quantity, not in quality.
In other words, using high-grade agarwood can get more essential oils, but its physical properties are basically the same as those prepared from low-grade agarwood.
Using the solvent extraction method, the extract obtained by distillation or evaporation to remove the solvent is golden yellow, and in the case of a relatively large amount, it appears black due to low transparency.
This is because the solvent extraction method will dissolve vegetable waxes, resins and pigments with more complex molecular structures. The fluidity looks good at room temperature (around 15°C) because there is a considerable amount of solvent remaining in it.
The residual solvent is removed again under vacuum conditions. The refined agarwood essential oil (volatile components) obtained by rectification is light yellow, which is similar in appearance to the product obtained by water vapor distillation but is slightly darker than other colors (this is not very sure, Because agarwood essential oil will deteriorate and change its color due to improper storage and other reasons).
